Anti-Slavery Plaque, c.1800
Building on the success of its special exhibition ‘Chasing Freedom -The Royal Navy and the suppression of the Transatlantic Slave Trade’, marking 200 years since the act for the abolition of the slave trade, the Royal Naval Museum has purchased a rare Anti-Slavery plaque.
The plaque, circa 1800, is crafted from painted ivory and wax. In the foreground the plaque bears the inscription ‘Britannia to thee we appeal’, whilst in the background a ship flies the white ensign, the traditonal symbol of the Royal Navy.
