What are these service women doing in these outfits?

 The subject of this photograph from the WRNS Historic Collection was a mystery until we received a letter from Joan Holloway, a Wren and wartime bride.  She recalls how she took advantage of a new scheme that allowed Wrens to borrow a dress from a collection donated by the American charity ‘Daughters of Empire’.  Without such assistance it was hard for brides to obtain a special outfit for their wedding day due to clothing restrictions.  The photograph was probably taken to publicise the launch of the scheme.
