The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the Royal Naval Museum £664,000 of the £750,000 needed to develop an online resource focusing on the history of the Royal Navy during the 20th century.
Sea Your History is a partnership project. The Royal Naval Museum, Royal Marines Museum, The Royal Navy Submarines Museum, Fleet Air Arm Museum, Fleet Photographic Unit, Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historic Trust and the Mary Rose Trust are all working together to make some of their 20th century collections accessible and available online.
Working with its supporting partners, the Sea Your History team selected 15,000 items for digitisation, prepared online exhibitions exploring key themes, collected 90 new oral history recordings, developed 3 on-site education projects, created e a new showcase exhibition at the Museum and made the Museum’s collections catalogue available online
The project staff was made up of the Project Manager, IT Officer, Oral Historian, Documentation Assistant and four Researchers.
The first themes and oral history projects went live with the website in January 2007. The Dockyard theme went live in March 2007, whilst the remaining themes went live during Summer 2007 and March 2008. The project ran from 2005 – 2008.
The exhibition opened in April 2008 and the official launch of the website and exhibition was in Summer 2008.
