The Royal Naval Museum is throwing open its doors to the under 7s for a week of fun-filled activities designed especially for them. Every day children will have the opportunity to explore things connected to life in and across the sea, through a series of creative, hands-on activities including art, dressing up, object-handling and story telling. An ideal tool for nurseries and schools, each day aims to increase curiosity and imagination as well as stimulate interest in teh sea around us!

Using our innovative, Sea your World learning environment this session combines music, storytelling, creative play, dressing-up and art to take children on a voyage investigating life in and around the sea. Along the way they meet weird and wonderful sea creatures, explore the seabed and find buried treasure!

Sailing around the world, pupils follow in the footsteps of the early Navy to explore life in different countries. From Africa to Australia, India and beyond this interactive session gives pupils the chance to discover more about different cultures through storytelling, role-play, and object handling.
TUDOR EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY

From the time of the Tudors and the early Navy sailors have been taking to the high seas to discover and explore new territories. Through investigative activities using our discovery boxes and navigational charts, pupils follow in the footsteps of maritime explorers, finding out about their journeys and the discoveries that changed life back home. Before returning home they learn how to use navigational instruments and prepare a report of their findings.

A session between HMS Victory and the Royal Naval Museum. Come and join us for an action packed, activity-based session in which pupils will be ‘trained’ as new naval recruits. From object-handling, calculating latitude and longitude to marking up charts, knot tying and sending signals, pupils discover first-hand what life was like in Nelson’s Navy.

Using unique artefacts, photographs and oral histories, pupils follow in the footsteps of servicemen and women during World War II. Activities include object-handling, interpreting documents and photographs and listening to individual accounts and experiences to prepare kitbags for personnel in different areas of the conflict.
DOCKYARD: THEN AND NOW

A chance to find out about local history and the development of Portsmouth Dockyard. Pupils tour the Dockyard, investigating areas not usually open to the public to find out about changes through time. They then complete language-based activities to produce short poems and take part in an artefact handling session to discover more about the different types of work carried out across the ages.

A chance for pupils to explore the wider issues and human stories behind slavery. Through a variety of activities focusing on artefacts, replicas and creative writing pupils work together to explore characters and events, leading to group and class discussions on Human Rights issues, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, its legacy and continued impact today.

THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE AND THE ROYAL NAVY

Artefacts, primary and secondary sources from the collection are interpreted to investigate the development and impact of the Slave Trade and the role of the Royal Navy in the abolition of slavery. Working in groups, students carry out investigative activities, interpreting evidence and analysing case studies to put together a presentation of their findings.

The Museum galleries, sea charts, paintings and views from the Museum of the Dockyard and harbour itself are all used as inspiration for this art workshop. During the session led by a professional artist, pupils explore adapting colour, textures and techniques to create their own collage of a journey at sea.

Taking Nelson as a case study pupils investigate portraits and the messages behinf them. Working with a professional artist they use original portraits from the Museum collection and modern images to explore meanings behind costume, pose and symbols. They then learn new techniques to create multi-layered portraits of each other using pastels, crayons and text.

A chance for pupils to work with a professional artist to investigate how different cultures and art forms influenced artists accompanying Naval expeditions and in turn shaped art in this country. Taking inspiration from the galleries and artefacts pupils focus on patterns from around the world, experiment with colour and print repeat patterns, before making their own printing block to take away.

Incorporating behind the scenes tours, gallery visits and focused activities these tailor-made sessions provide secondary and further education students with a unique opportunity to access the Royal Naval Museum archives and examine primary sources relevant to their course of study. In this activity-based session students learn about the Museum (the oldest in the Dockyard) as a visitor and heritage attraction. In groups they investigate target audiences, marketing and evaluation materials, go on a tour of the galleries, conduct a SWOT analysis and produce a piece of promotional material customised for a specific audience. The session can also be extended to include a detailed presentation on customer services, marketing and promotion.

This day long session is ideal for teachers wishing to extend their subject knowledge and learn more about the wider issues surrounding slavery. Using artefacts, archives and a range of resources, different approaches and techniques will be explored to demonstrate how the subject relates to citizenship as well as history and help teachers tackle the sensitive issues raised by the subject in the classroom.
