Sea Your History

Sea Your History project starts at Museum

What is Sea Your History?

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given the Royal Naval Museum funding to develop an online resource focusing on the history of the Royal Navy during the 20th century.

Sea Your History is a partnership project. The Royal Naval Museum, Royal Marines Museum, The Royal Navy Submarines Museum, Fleet Air Arm Museum, Fleet Photographic Unit and Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historic Trust are all working together to make some of their 20th century collections accessible and available online.

Working with its supporting partners, the Sea Your History project will;

  • select 15,000 items for digitisation
  • prepare online exhibitions exploring key themes
  • collect 90 new oral history recordings
  • develop 3 on-site education projects
  • create a new showcase exhibition at the Museum
  • make the Museum’s collections catalogue available online

Project Update

The project began in November 2005 when the Project Manager, Helen Gibbons took up post. Since then, the rest of the team have come on board. The full project team consists of a Documentation Assistant, an IT Officer, an Oral Historian and four Researchers, who will be spending time with the Project’s Partner Collections.

Having spent the initial months planning, preparing documents for the Lottery and recruiting staff, April saw the arrival of the project’s four Researchers and the start of the project proper.

What’s coming up?

Between May and December 2006, the project team will be:

Selecting, digitising and captioning items

  • Researching ‘The Navy’s People’ learning package
  • Researching ‘The Dockyard; Then and Now’ learning package
  • Carrying out Oral History interviews focusing on ‘Women at Sea’ and ‘Diving into the Past’
