Message from New Chairman
Commenting on his appointment, Sir Peter said 'After nearly 40 years in the Service, I realised just how significant the Navy's museums are and what an important job they do, not just in preserving its heritage, but also in promoting public understanding of its continuing importance. I am therefore very honoured to have been appointed Chairman of Trustees of the Royal Naval Museum and will do all I can to support and sustain it.
I should like to pay tribute to the achievements of my predecessor, Vice Admiral Sir Barry Wilson. Under his energetic leadership, the Museum undertook the largest capital development in its history, raising and spending £5.3 million on rejuvenating three exhibition galleries and creating state-of-the-art storage facilities for the collections in its care.
I am particularly looking forward to being involved in the events that are being planned to commemorate the Bi-centenary of Trafalgar in 2005 and the preservation and display of HMS Victory’s foretopsail.’
