Access to the collections

The Museum's library and manuscript collections can both be consulted within the Library Reading Room by prior appointment.  You can now also search the manuscript catalogue on-line.

Opening hours

The Royal Naval Museum Library Reading Room is open Monday - Friday 10.00 - 16.00* unless otherwise stated. Please see our Library news page for any details of changes.

Reading Room assistance

Readers can access the London Gazettes, Navy Lists and a large number of reference resources in the Reading Room. Readers can also access the library and manuscript catalogues within the Reading Room for materials held in our environmentally controlled bookstore, Staff are on hand to advise readers on resources held within the library and can advise on external sources of information, if necessary. Appointments

Ideally, members of the public should make an appointment 24 hours in advance to view the collection. You need to bring a form of official identification (a full passport or photographic driving licence or two pieces of evidence with your address (eg bank statement, council tax bill, utility bill etc) to comply with current Naval Base security regulations.

Visitors to the Heritage Dockyard may be able to arrange to come to the Reading Room on the day. Please contact the Museum's main reception desk for details when you visit.
