Families - What to do during your visit

The Museum Galleries are very hands-on with lots of interactives and things to do for children of all ages.

Activity Cart

We are currently redeveloping the RNM's Activity Cart but it will soon be available in our Learning Centre seven days a week to entertain visiting families and help you explore our displays and collections. From games, to storybooks, colouring activities, simple art and craft activities and dressing-up, there is something to keep toddlers and children happy whilst discovering more about the Royal Navy and maritime history.

Exciting new dockyard backpack scheme at RNM

Thanks to a development grant from the regional MDOs of MLA South East, in 2007 the Royal Naval Museum launched an exciting new scheme for families visiting the dockyard.  Visitors will now have the opportunity to explore the dockyard in a brand new way…all they need is an RNM backpack!

Aimed at families with children under 16, the backpack contains an interactive, self-guided trail and a guide for grown-up’s, fun learning activities and all the materials they need to be creative.  With three themes to choose from - Dockyard Detectives, Working Hard at the Dockyard and Dockyard Code Crackers - you can come back and try a different one every time, at absolutely no charge!

The backpacks are available all year round from the RNM Learning Centre. For further information about the backpack scheme or if you and your family would like to be involved in free family activity trials please contact the Learning Team at the Museum.
